What’s on in October

I apologise for this slightly belated post. Some one I love was in hospital for half of the week with appendicitis, and I have been away from my computer! I won’t go into details, but they are on the mend now thankfully.

I wanted to write a post about what’s coming up in October, because it’s a rather exciting month.

First of all, it’s time for Buy Nothing New Month again. I have already taken the pledge to ‘buy nothing new’ for the next month. Buy Nothing New Month encourages you to stop and think about how much you really need to buy new – the website states that it’s about thinking where our stuff comes from (finite resources) and where it goes when we’re done (often landfill) and what are the fantastic alternatives out there to extend the life of our ‘stuff’. I like getting behind this fantastic cause because it promotes everything I believe in.

As many people will also know, it’s also Frocktober. Frocktober raises money for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation to support research an early detection. It’s all about donning your favourite frocks to help raise money towards this fabulous cause. I quite like the mission statement, so I thought I’d share it with you:

For the good of women’s health, we’ll
Raise our voices, and some wealth.
October, 10th month of the year, we’ll
Create awareness, knowledge share.
Kick up our heels, reject our jeans
Take Nan’s old dress, take to machines….
Our message is “We’re
Beautiful – no matter size or shape”.
Enjoy the month, frock up and please…
Reach deep for FROCK-ing sake!!!

This is a number of ways to get involved, and you can read more here.

Next we come to the events that are coming up. The Love Vintage Show is swinging by Melbourne again (yay!) from the 5-7 October. Find out more about the event here.

The Suitcase Rummage will also be back on 21 October. In fact, they are back monthly for the rest of the year at Thornbury Theatre. Read more here.

Take 2 Markets will be making two appearances this month, at Geelong West Town Hall on 7 October, and at Northcote Town Hall on 21 October.

We also have a few op-shop tours coming up with Melbourne Op Shop Tours (I’m only taking smaller private tours myself at the moment).

Bayside Brighton Tour – with Erica from Recycled Fashion (get in quick, there is still time to book!)
Saturday 6 October
Start: Sandringham 9.45 am
Finish: Hampton 2.00 pm

Kew Tour
Saturday 13 October
Start: Kew Junction 9.30 am
Finish: Kew East 2.00 pm
And there we are. If I have missed anything important, let me know and I’ll slot it in! There are so many fabulous things on this month it’s hard to keep track. I know I’ll be getting involved, so stay tuned for my October adventures!
